study task 6 - group feedback

concertina sketch book: feedback and development

after we gave our presentntation in little groups we all fed back to each other and it was really helpful to get ideas for development for the sketchbook and find out what people thought worked and what they thought wasn't as good

it was really helpful for me to hear that I don't need to be as obvious with the messages in my work and that we can be a lot more ambiguous and abstract. the work people most liked was the really simple stripped back shaped based stuff towards the end of my book and I'm really happy with that as its something I'd like to explore more.

Jamie's given me the really good idea of reinterpreting and repainting famous paintings but pulling out shapes or colour and abstracting the painting beyond recognition which I really like the sound of and I think this could be something thats very interesting to explore visually through different medias.

so far instead of looking at masterpieces I've been working though the wikapedia list of most expensive paintings sold and using that as a starting point. I'm still experimenting and feeling my way around my topic but I've definitely got more of a solid and focused direction which I'm enjoying and is making it easier for me to create work.

typed up group feedback form:

How does money and power control culture
What influence to the upper class have over art
How is art valued and what does it mean
The ideology of the gallery space
What are the strengths in how they have responded to this subject area?
(Breadth of research? Criticality of image analysis? Effective Triangulation?)
Wide range of research from personal and individual sources
Triangulation finished and good bibliography
Lots of different kinds of sources, web articles books and documentaries
Clear explanations of points and arguments when presenting work
Good explanation and thinking behind work in the cop sketchbook
How have they responded to the Visual Journal element? (ideas, content, materials, process, experimentation, crafting…)
List 3 positive points:
Experimented with a range of different media
Completed over half of the sketchbook

Really considered how the image making relates to the themes discussed in the
And 3 areas that could be developed further:
Pushing the effective ideas further

Finding a more concrete direction with the book

Planning outside of the book instead of working straight into it so that work is of the highest quality
How effectively is the illustrator synthesising research, contextual analysis and their own practical explorations? (Does it all make sense together? Do elements feel connected?)
Ideas seem to have specifically directed experimentation, use of media and choice of imagery in a logical and well thought way
Sketchbook feels well connected to the subject matter
Really like the more abstract imagery

What are the next steps with the research project, practical and theoretical?
(Is a more experimental approach required? Do they need to find more imagery? Is there a particular practical focus they should continue with? Be Honest, Critical and Helpful as to how this project can grow from this point.)
Experiment with print in the COP sketchbook
Experiment with digital in the COP sketchbook
Select a range of successful imagery and really try to push it further in the sketchbook
Be more decisive and abstract don't be afraid to make bold decisions
Continue working at a good pace
